The Carpathians form a major mountain system in southeastern Europe, curving 900 miles along the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, and the Ukraine. This long mountainous arc cradles the lush plains of Hungary. Elevations range from around 3,000 to 8,000 feet. The range reaches 160 miles wide along the Polish-Slovak border, but further east its width narrows to just 20 miles at the Dukla Pass.
The highest summits of the Carpathians are situated in a picturesque alpine region called Tatra, now part of Tatransky National Park, on the Slovak-Polish border. The region is only thirty miles long and ten across, but packs great beauty. Tatra is a small rugged massif, in which ten summits top 8,500 feet, and crags often fall over 2,000 feet into deep gouged cirques. This is the only area in the Carpathians where permanent snow fields are found. The highest peak is Gerlach (8,737 ft.), the highest peak between the Alps and the Caucasus.
