Iceland

Several volcanic peaks and icefields accentuate the landscape of this island, located in the North Atlantic, southwest of Greenland. The volcanoes are easy one day climbs, but tend to be snow-covered and icy. Bad weather can be expected year round, including very cold, wet, and windy conditions.The highest peak, Hvannadalshnukur (6,952 ft.), rises along thesoutheast coast. This is the highest of several high summits surrounding an old volcanic crater.The most active volcano on the island is Hekla, having a long history of eruptions.
