Greece and Albania are hilly and mountainous countries in southeastern Europe. The Greek peninsula is comprised of several large islands, with hundreds of smaller islands rising in the surrounding seas, and many mountains rising close to if not directly out of the water. The Greek Mountains are essentially a continuation of the Dinaric Alps. Ancient villages are scattered along the slopes of many of the mountains, sometimes up to 5,000 feet, where shepherds graze their flocks in the high pastures.
The mountains have played important roles in the history of the Greek people. This is especially true for two of the most famous mountains, Olympus and Parnassus, which played important roles in Greek mythology. Mount Olympus (9,570 feet) is the highest mountain in Greece, and Mount Korab (9,032 feet) is the highest mountain in Albania.
