Mount Baker

Easton Glacier

Description

This is the second of two popular routes to the summit of Mount Baker, this one approaching from the South. Travel east of Sedro Wooley on State Highway 20, and about 14 miles east of town turn north on Baker Lake Road. After about 12 miles, turn left on Forest Service Road 12 and follow the signs to Shreibers Meadows. This is a very popular day use area, with plenty of parking plus restrooms. The trail winds through meadows and makes its way to the Railroad Grade, a prominent moraine, then ascends to the top of the Railroad Grade, where most climbers camp.

From here, the route simply meanders up the Easton Glacier, dodging crevasses, generally keeping to the left. At just above 9,300 feet, the route reaches the rim of the active volcanic crater, a superb place to stop for a quick snack before continuing up the Roman Wall to the summit plateau, then on to the summit.
