Sentinel Peak

Sentinel Peak's location deep inside Olympic National Park makes it a grand vista from which to see the remote interior of this beautiful park. Chances are you will have this summit to yourself to enjoy in splendid isolation from the more popular mountain climbing destinations. From the Dosewallips trailhead, follow the main fork of the Dosewallips River Trail eight miles to campsites at Deception Creek. Three more miles up the trail reach Bear Camp, and then another two miles to Dose Meadows camp. Expect decent opportunities to see black bears and deer around Bear Camp and Dose Meadows. Then the trail continues two more miles to Hayden Pass and drops to the Elwha River. From Hayden Pass it is an easy half mile walk to the summit. The summit of Sentinel Peak offers an excellent view of the Mt. Anderson massif and of Mt. Deception and Mt. Mystery. You can also look down at the Thousand Acre Meadow which invites further exploration. Take an ice axe in spring because the trail to Hayden Pass will be snow covered on the north slopes below the pass. Total distance from trailhead to summit is about 17 miles one way.
