Description
Cabezon Peak is a volcanic plug that rises about 1500' above the surrounding mesa.
From Albuquerque head north on I-25 then head northwest on 555. Past San Ysidro turn on a road heading south to San Luis. Continue on this past where the pavement ends . Take a left a a Y that heads to the south side of the peak until you see a smaller road that heads right for it.
The trail circles around the peak a bit until you see a chimney on your left. From there head up the talus slope toward the chimney. There are many places where hand and footholds are needed .There is a noticible herd path that brings you to the rim. From there its a short scramble to the top. There is a rock wind shelter and can (register) on top.
