Mount Shasta Summit Log (#6977)

foiled for the second time! attempted last year as well and had a couple guys get sick. this year the weather decided to share a little storm with us. went up via green butte to sargeant's ridge. we had two camps - one at app 8050 and then a second at app 9400. left at 0100 on sat morning gaining the ridge from our site within an hour. we roped up for the bulk of our climb d/t inexperience and just wanted to be cautious. definetely more challenging than avalanche gulch! made it to thumb rock by 0730 and then across the top of red rocks to join in with climbers from avalanche gulch. made it up to the base of misery hill amidst some pretty sig winds/fog. several groups hanging out there deciding on whether or not to continue. most decided to turn back including our group pausing only for a couple pictures and then off! went back down avalanche gulch and then crossed over to green butte. back to camp. packed up and left our camp around 1830 for our vehicles. was very pleased with our group of six. 3 first-timers and they loved it!

suggestions - - stay at the carriage house if you have a group. we spent a night on both sides of our trip. 150 usd for all six of us. had a kitchen, jacuzzi, 2 bedrooms and a lovely host and hostess! - dined at the black bear diner? right on the main drive and also at serges. excellent food. - plenty of last minute gear at the fifth season - cheaper for us to fly into sacramento - 160 usd from nashville rt - definetely do another route besides avalanche gulch. more solitude also I think that ridge lines are beautiful! casaval is another great option.
