Karrinyarra (Central Mount Wedge)

Description

This spectacular peak rises very steeply from the flat wooded plain and can be seen from over 100km away on the Tanami road. The North and South faces are sheer walls of red rock and the views of the Stewart Bluff Range are very beautiful from the summit. Although easily ascended from the salt lake at the western end of the range, this mountain is very rarely climbed. Seak permission (and advice)at Karrinyarra outstation (20 km North on the Newhaven Road) as this is very sacred ground to the Warlpiri and Luritja people. Avoid climbing in summer as the temperature often reaches 40C and heavy rain can make the dirt roads impassable. Allow a full day as there are no marked trails or conveniant camping areas on the mountain.
