I climbed Zugspitze solo on July 2, 2010. Started at 3:30 from the free car parking at Kreuzeckbahn lift station (around 750 m above the see level). From there walked towards Hammersbach and then to Höllental-klamm (the fee 3 euro at the Klamm hut, it seems charged in any direction, yet I was there at 4:30 and there was nobody around to charge me). Long walks through numerous tunnels followed, electrical light available. I passed Höllentalanger hut at 5:40. The first people that morning I met at two famous ferratas above the hut (Leiter and Brett), then a walk followed over the glacier where I used crampons. After that the route switched to the rock with ferratas almost all the time to the summit. I reached the summit at 12:15, after 8 hours and 45 minutes. It was crowded with climbers and also with tourists who came by the cable-car that starts from Eibsee, on the north side of the mountain. Used 3 liters of water for the ascent on that very hot day. In short, attractive climbing that includes many features (tunnels, rock, very exposed ferratas, and glacier walk), perfect for soloists.

Essential gear: harness and v-rope; helmet and crampons good to have but not essential.
