High Street

Description

High Street is the highest summit of the long north to south ridge close to the eastern edge of the Lake District. The area sees less visitors than the more popular fells further west with most ascents being made from the Troutbeck Valley to the South because of its proximity to the resorts of Windermere and Ambleside.

The name "High Street" comes from the Roman Road - traces of which can still be seen - that runs along the wide summit ridge and marks the path along the whole range.

From the South the mountain presents broad grassy slopes broken by the familiar conical outlines of Froswick and Ill Bell - another popular walk - but to the east is a much finer prospect. Shadowy crags drop to the grand surroundings of Mardale and Haweswater and it is on this side that the best ascent routes are to be found. The ridge of Rough Crag leads the walker safely above the cliffs to the summit passing above the wild setting of Blea Water on one side and lonely Riggindale on the other.
