North Pack Monadnock

Description

North Pack Monadnock is the northernmost peak of the Wapack Range. It is the second highest peak in the range at 2,276 ft. The lower part of the mountain is northern hardwood forest and the upper part gives way to a boreal forest of hemlock and spruce. The climb is of the walk-up variety with some ledge scrambling on some trails. The summit has a remote feel to it, unlike South Pack Monadnock approximately 2 miles south which supports an auto road, fire tower along with microwave towers. The main access trails are quickly packed out in the winter while lesser trails may require snowshoes. A loop trail, known as the Cliff trail provides great views of the cliffs on the southern side of the mountain. There is no camping allowed on the mountain. The north-south Wapack trail crosses the summit and provides the most direct route to the summit in only 1.6 miles from the Old Mountain Rd in Greenfield, NH. A longer and more scenic approach leaves the same road about 0.5 miles to the east. This trail is called Ted's Trail. The trail reaches the summit in 2.9 miles.
