Red Screes

Description

The motorist heading over Kirkstone Pass between Windermere and Ullswater cannot fail to be aware of the towering mass of crags and scree rising to the West over 1000 feet higher again than the summit of the pass. This fell which is also prominent in views from the southern Lake District is Red Screes and it is well named for the reddish tint to the scree slopes is clearly visible.

The shortest way to the summit is from the top of the pass where a path leads up the precipitous looking slopes by a surprisingly easy if steep route. A less steep but longer ascent is from Ambleside via the broad south west ridge over Snarker Pike and returning by Scandale Pass and a pleasant valley path. Equally the fell can be ascended from Brothers' Water to the North via Scandale Pass. The position of the fell between the Fairfield and High Street groups on the north-south watershed of Lakeland ensures stunning views from the summit - when it's not raining that is!
