Description
Hübschhorn (3192 m) is the mountain that raises directly above the Simplon pass (2005 m), on its south-east side. It can be climbed in 3 hours from the pass. Although the mountain dominates the pass, there is no single sign about the direction for climbing. Hence, finding the starting point of a route can be tricky especially if one starts at dark.
The most direct way to climb Hübschhorn is to go from the road (or from the Simplon Hospiz) towards the lake (Rotelsee) that is just at the foot of the mountain. From there, one should go directly up towards the electric power tower, pass the water reservoir from the left side, and continue all the way up towards the ridge (that has general southwest-northeast direction). In this part there is a slight path, and also some blue marks on rocks, that help indeed finding the way. After going shortly along the ridge, one passes to the south-west side of the mountain in order to avoid huge rocks on the ridge. After that one is again close to the ridge till the summit.
The summit is elongated in nearly the same southwest-northeast direction, there is a big cairn at its beginning, marking the highest point at this end, and a metal cross at the other end that can be reached in about 10 minutes.
