Description
Pico Santo Cristo takes it's name from the Laguna de Santo Cristo, wich is the largest glacier lagoon on the Venezuelan Andes. It is named as one of the highest peaks of Mérida state at Venezuela, although Andean limits between the states of Mérida and Barinas are not clearly defined yet, especially at the zone where Pico Santo Cristo is located.
To reach the peak it is first necessary to go to Laguna de Santo Cristo, starting at the small town of Gavidia, which is located at the southwest of the town of San Rafael de Mucuchíes; a paved road is available. From Gavidia starts a dirt road that turns into a track that climbs until the pass named Alto de Santo Cristo, and then descends to the lagoon. From Laguna de Santo Cristo to the summit there is no track, so visual orientation is necessary to find the way up. A GPS is advisable. Good luck!
