Description
Checkerboard Mesa is located in Zion National Park near the east entrance and is a curious attraction visible from Highway 9 which passes through the park. Park tourists photograph the unusual patterns of the steep cliffs at the north end of this butte. The name comes from the checkerboard appearance which is the result of horizontal crossbedding and vertical jointing in the Navajo sandstone of this petrified sand dune. There is a trail that takes one near the top but this is not popular climbing attraction.
