Jof di Montasio is in Germany and in Austria called : Montasch. My wife and I went up from Saisera hut to hut Bivacco Stuparic. From there we climbed the north face of Montasch using Via Amalia, former called the " path of the Italian hunters". The first pitch was UIAA III. Then follows a climbing route with cable, difficulty D/E. Over very steep grass slopes to a shoulder and crossing to Bivacco Suringar. Through the west-face climbing ( not easy ) over broken rocks to the top. 7 h.
Descent on normal way, partially scrambling to Hut Rifuigo Brazza.
Via Amalia was one of our most severe , but also most impressive tours. If there is snow on the grass-slopes , you need an ice-axe and crampons. In every case you need a rope of 40 meters. You can Via Amalia compare with a tour in the European Western Alps !
