Taiwan is an island off the southeast coast of China. The western third of Taiwan consists of gently rolling plains, but the remainder of the island is rugged and mountainous. The Central Range is the backbone of Taiwan, stretching northward from the island's southern tip. This range is home to the highest peaks. Portions of the east coast are also spectacular, as sheer rocky walls tower from the sea.
Taiwan's weather is warm but typically overcast, and receives a tremendous amount of rainfall, particularly during the southwest monsoon from June through August.
Taiwan's highest peak is Yu Shan (13,113 ft/ 3997 m).
