Located in Western Central Kenya, the Aberdare Range comprises a section of the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley. It is a heavily forested range, with average elevation ranging from 12,000 to 13,000 feet. Much of it is now contained within the Aberdare National Park, where Naivasha and Gilgil are the primary hiking and climbing centers. The Aberdare was formerly known as the Sattima Range, a name which still survives in Oldoinyo la Satima (13,120 ft.), the highest peak. Several miles east of the range, Mount Kenya (17,057 ft.) is the second highest mountain in Africa.
