Jan Mayen is a small volcanic island in the far north Norwegian Sea, northwest of Norway, and northeast of Iceland. It is 35 miles long, and its width varies from three to twelve miles. Though often obscured by fog, the Beerenberg volcano (7,470 ft/ 2,277m) towers over the island, its fifteen glaciers spreading to the sea. The summit's easiest approach is from its south glacier. Stopovers at Jan Mayen specifically for the purpose of climbing have been made by parties en route to Greenland from the European mainland.
