The mountain was the goal. That's what started the whole trip. Let's go climb Mount Kilimanjaro we said. Yet so much more happened. Of the five in our party, two of us made it to Uhuru Peak -- myself and my mother in law.
My father in law and my son (13 years)developed symptoms AMS (acute mountain sickness). They were rushed down the mountain on the last night. My wife, whom was feeling fine accompanied my son. Taking care of yourself on the mountain is so important. Drinking lots of water and eating even though you have no appetite. My water line in my backpack froze at about 17,000 feet. As a result I didn't drink as often as needed.
It is a tough ascent even for the fittest. It's a great sense of accomplishment. I would do it again and just may have to with my wife and son.
