The peak of the Schilthorn rises across the Sefeinenfurka Pass to the north of the main ridge of the Bernese Alps. At just short of 10000 feet, the mountain is not among the highest in the range but its position set apart from the higher peaks affords expansive views which in clear weather extend from the Black Forest in Germany to Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Closer at hand a unique perspective of the Jungfrau and Eiger is seen across the depths of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

These views are easy to attain - thanks to the cable car - though the hike up from Murren at 1638m is well worth the effort and can be shortened slightly by taking the funicular to Almendhubel (1912m). The route is well marked and follows the course of the Inferno Ski Race before climbing the south east ridge - one short exposed section protected by a fixed handrail - to emerge on the summit by the distinctive revolving restaurant as seen in James Bond's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" part of which was filmed here. Another route ascends via the Roter Hard from the Sefeinenfurka path just beyond the Rotstock Hut. This way is much steeper and involves some scrambling in its upper section.

Murren and Lauterbrunnen are easy to access being on the rail network. Murren is traffic free.

We started in the morning from Muerren on the advice of the owner of our hotel. The climb went rather quickly, probably less than six hours including lunch at a huette. On the trails nearest the top...

A long climb from Murren, but the hardest part was at the beginning. A welcome halfway stop at the Schilthorn Hut, then a beautiful lake, followed by an exposed arete just before the summit presented...

We (a friend and I) started in Stechelberg (922 m), a small town near Interlaken. We took a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and then a bus from there to Stechelberg. We hiked for nearly seven...
