Mount Saint Helens Trip Report (#6772)

Wow, what a day! I joined a group of 9 friends to try my luck on the moountain. It was my first trip, save a trip to the visitor center. The weather forcast was promising, and for once, held true. We set out at about 7:30, and during our accent, watched the sun burn off the cloud layer, making each catch-your-breath stop a new visual experience. By the time we reached the summit, we had brilliant blue skies and seemingly unlimited visability. The veiws were spectacular, and worth every step up upward.

On the hill, we met a couple of park rangers, who were moving up the mountain will billy-goat ease. They were very pleasant and helpful, but we also saw them give a group of hikers a $100 ticket for climbing without a permit - so a word to the wise: spend the $15 and don't make these nice people have to do that.

By the time we hit the biv, the temp was about 90, making that first beer awfully good. I took four liters of water up, and could have used another liter (and could have used more sunscreen, too).

Unlike a lot of climbs, you can see the finish line if this mountain about an hour out. It made it much easier to keep slogging away.

A brilliant day, all in all....
