Pico Duarte Trip Report (#8281)

I was part of a Boys Scouts of America (Troop 760) that climbed the peak in the summer of 75. We were on of the youngest expeditions to go there, average age 15. Being scouts we carried most of our gear on our backs all the way (80 lbs. packs aprox.), unlike most other people that use mules to carry their gear. One afternoon before arriving to the peak we had a big thunderstorm which forced us to stop in a hurry because of the danger on the lighting being attracted to the frames of our backpacks, we pitch just enough tents to squeeze everyone in and ate things that did not need to be cook because it was impossible to start a fire. This in our future expeditions around the country became known as the "Pico Duarte dinner special". The most beautiful sunset I've ever seen was in the plateau the day before arriving at the peak.
