Bard Peak is located at the isthmus of the Kenai Peninsula where the Chugach and Kenai mountain ranges meet. While modest in height, local relief is great as the eastern aspect of the mountain rises up from the western inlet reaches of Prince William Sound. Bard Peak is surrounded by ice: the Shakespeare Glacier on the northern slope, the Whittier Glacier to the east, the Burns Glacier to the south, and the Portage Glacier to the west. Bard Peak is often seen and photographed because it is a backdrop to Portage Lake, one of Alaska's most visited tourist areas.
Bard is the correct spelling. It is misspelled Baird on the USGS map. The peak's name Bard is in keeping with a poet story-teller theme and surrounding named land features: Robert Burns (Burns Glacier), William Shakespeare (Shakespeare Glacier), John Greenleaf Whittier, (Whittier Glacier), etc.
