Sasseneire (3253 m) is a sharp peak to the west from the Moiry lake, between Val de Moiry and Val d'Herens. It can be climbed from both valleys. The most convenient starting point from the Moiry side is the dam of the Moiry lake (2249 m), with car and post-bus access and a free parking area in front of the restaurant at the dam. From there one should follow the signs towards Col de Torrent (2919 m).
From the dam to the Col it is a pleasant walk over pastures, passing the lake Autannes (2696 m) and with perfect views towards 4000 meters high mountains at the southern end of the Moiry valley. At the Col the view extends to the west over the Val d’Herens and as far as to Mont Blanc and many mountains in between. There are no signs for the Sasseneire whatsoever, yet the direction from the Col is obvious: the ridge in the north-west direction. The remaining part of the climb is still unproblematic although now it is a pure rock all the way to the summit.
Timing: 2.5 hours from the dam to the Col de Torent, plus 1 hour from the Col to the summit. No equipment required, no fees, no red tapes. From the Val d'Herens the starting point is the village Villa (around 1750 m).
Useful map: Arolla (Swisstopo, 1:50000).
