Climbed Stuart via Longs Pass and the Cascadian Couloir with Artie Huycke. We left the Esmeralda Basin parking lot at 6 a.m., summited at 4 p.m., and returned by midnight. Plenty of elevation for 18 hours. The weather was perfect, warm and calm up top, and the infamous snowfield beneath the false summit had melted just enough to allow us to circumvent it. Our greatest danger was self-imposed as I nearly nailed Artie with a small boulder as we started down. Also, if you come this way bring along 4 liters of water from Ingalls Creek. That's one dry and dusty couloir. This was a particularly rewarding climb for me as I was following in the footsteps of my father-in-law, Robert Schell of Cashmere, who climbed Stuart in 1948.
