Went up a non-standard route (from the northeast from Pine Creek Trailhead). Hiked in 4.7 miles to Colorado Trail junction and set up backcountry camp on 22nd. Hiked west up Missouri basin to Lil John's cabin and crossed the creek south and up to the ridge up the S. Pine Creek trail. At ridge bailed off the trail and followed the ridge SW straight to the summit. Final 500ft quite a strenuous slope. Hiked down from the summit using the N ridge. Nice and gentle at first...then straight down a 1500ft scree and talus slope, then another 45 min. of bushwhacking before jumping the creek to gain the Pine Creek trail and back E to camp. Saw group of 14 mountain goat on NW face about 13,000 ft. Great weather and super views all the way to Snowmass and Capitol peaks to the west. Upper Missouri Basin as beautiful as advertised with four 14ers making up the surrounding high country. A great and challenging loop hike.
