The Caucasus range is a wonderful mountain range with impressive summits, rocks and glaciers, enough water for green and forrested valleys and thus is a very beautiful place to be. From the ascent to Mt. Elbrus you can see all this at any time.
After desastrous fire the Prijut 11 hut is planned to be rebuilt, the plan (shown at the place) mentions completion for 2010, however, end of August 2010 there was a wooden platform on concrete foundations, but the construction of the hut itself was not even started. Some people used the platform as a really even camp ground (or for sunbathing). We stayed at the Diesel Hut just below which was a mixed experience due to a guardian who basically does nothing to keep the place in order - much to the benefit of a number of mice and to the detriment of the climbers...
The peak itself is a cold but very enjoyable place, great summit feeling, being on one of the seven summits is somehow special every time. Wheather was great - clear sky, phantastic view "down" to all the other so attractive Caucasian summits. Being allowed to enjoy a day like this with my father (aged 71) is a gift.
If you look for a guide, I would highly recommend Genia in every possible respect.
