An incredible experience and a dream come true!
Thursday, April 17 was spent on the road from La Paz and on the pleasant hike up to base camp. Friday we moved up to high camp, and prepared for the long night/day ahead. We left high camp at 1:30 am on Saturday, April 19, and by 8:45 am were standing on the summit! We had perfect conditions--a full moon, perfectly clear skies, hard snow, and barely any wind. The 7 hours to the summit were some of the longest and hardest of my life, but it was well worth it. My guide, Elio Gonzalez with the Club Andino Boliviano, and his assistants were spectacular and come highly recommended. And, we were told by the knowledgeable local porters that we were the first group of the year to actually summit! Saturday we came all the way back down to base camp and left for La Paz at 7 pm, arriving exhausted and dazed around midnight. I will need to stare at my photos awhile to believe it all. Good luck to all!
