SIFAT (www.sifat.org) volunteers (Jerry Barker, Tom Corson, Tim Bottenfield) climbed Mt. Illimani in Bolivia to raise funds for, and awareness of, the Quesimpuco Center for Health and Development (www.quesimpuco.org). This center provides health care and education to the indigenous peoples of the Chayanta Valley in the remote Bolivian Andes Mountains. The climbers donated their time and expenses in this endeavor.
Tuesday, 13 August: Spend day in La Paz with mission team. Visit Sky Bolivia to be outfitted for additional gear (if necessary) and take care of last minute details and planning for the expedition
Wednesday, 14 August: Leave from La Paz at 09:00 a.m. After 3 hours drive, arrive to Estancia Una (3.591 meters), continue walking for 3 hours to Base Camp (4.230 meters).
Thursday, 15 August: Leave Base Camp at 09:00 a.m. and after 5 hours of ascent through rocky terrain, arrive at High Base Camp--Nest of Condors (5.500 meters).
Friday, 16 August: Leave the camp at 02:30 a.m. (preparations start at 01.30 a.m.) After 7 hours of ascent over glacier, reach summit of Illimani--South Peak (6.438 meters). Descend to Nest of Condors Camp (4 hours), rest for 1.5 hours before continuing on to Base Camp, which takes approximately 3 more hours from Nest of Condors. Arrive at base camp around 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, 17 August: Leave Base Camp at 09:30 a.m. and walk 2 hours to the village of Una, pick up transport for 3 hour trip back to La Paz.
Sunday, 18 August: Return to U.S.A.
