We followed the Machame route (Machame gate-Machame hut-Shira-Barranco Valley-Karranga valley -Barafu and then to Stella and further to Uhuru. We decided to divide the walk from Barranco to Barafu in two, having an overnight stay at Karranga, No doubt that this gave us a less stressfull day before the final climb, and an extra day for adaption to the altitude. We started from Barafu at midnight and reached Stella by 07.10 in the morning. It is adviced to take 30 minutes break here before going on to Uhuru. The last 2 km may be quite painful. We arrived Uhuru at 08.05 and stayed there for almost one hour. When the sun rise, there are no problems with temperature, even at this height. Listen to the signals from the body, and return if you experience severe headack, stomach pain, sudden diarrea, or other rapid changes in body conditions. Good to have on the final climb: dried fruit, like raisins, apricote etc. Chocolate is less useful.
