We took the Marangu route and spent three days climbing and two days descending.
After Kibo hut the lack of oxygen began to affect many climbers and the climb was difficult.
Of our goup of about 12 most made it to Gilman's peak. Five of us continued on to Uhuru peak.
During our return from the summit our guide became disoriented, and he wandered into the bowl of the valcano. We struggled through waist deep snow before convincing him to climb to the ridge.
On our return one climber remained incapicated on Gilman's peak due to lack of oxygen and we had to carry him down. At lower elevations he recovered completely.
I still have my wreath and all of my memories of a wonderful experience.
In viewing these recent pictures I am amazed at how much the glacier has dissapated.
An experience like no other.
