There were four members of our party. At any one time there may be 150 climbers on the mountain and figure anywhere from 1-5 support people per climber (porters, guides and Asst. guides). We took the Machame (Whiskey) route to the top. I highly recommend this route although it is grueling, it allows for more acclimatization on days 3 & 4. Day four is a ten mile trek where you gain and lose elevation three times, finally ending up at 15,000ft.
We left for the summit from Barafu at 11:30PM on 9/22 and made Stella point about 6am, we continued to Uhuru and arrived at approx. 7:15 as the sun was rising. Glaciers are fantastic and the view into the crater was spectacular.
The return to Barafu hut was down the Barafu trail which is steep and consists of loose rock and sand. From the Barafu hut it is another 5-6 mile trek down a washboard trail to Mweka camp.
Good trek, good time, weather was great.
