Our group of six (ages 44 to 62)chose the UMBWE Route that is known as the "risky" route as opposed to the "Coca-Cola" Marangu Route. This route gets you higher quicker, offering better acclimatization time at altitude and shorter days between Barranco Camp and Barafu Camp.
We departed Barafu at 23:30 Feb. 13th and summited Uhuru Peak at 07:22 Feb. 14th. Glorious sunrise from Stella Point, and walked on snow the last 145 meters to Uhuru Peak.
We descended via the Mweka Route choosing to overnight at "High Camp" (Millennium)rather than Mweka Camp. It made for a longer trek out the last day, but we were grateful for the rest.
Experience of a lifetime!
