Climbed the Rongai route in June 2006. The route was very scenic and diverse and throughly enjoyable. I was most impressed with how clean the lower slopes and camps of Kilimanjaro were and it was good to see how dilligent the guides were about keeping the campsites presentable. We encountered only three other parties, all who were small groups like ourselves of two or three. After having heard reports of the crowds and mess it was nice to have a different and pleasurable experience. The guides and porters were fantastic and looked after us very well.
The climb itself was tough, made worse by the fact that I got food poisoning on day 3 and hence couldn't summit so only made it up to Kibo Camp. The rest of the group were fine and all did well, and I managed to walk the entire way down. It's a pity we hadn't factored in an additional day. As I was almost fully recovered 24 hours later it would have been nice to have the freedom to be able to rest and then attempt the summit a day later. I will be back in 2008 to climb again, this time on the Machame route. Looking forward to it!
