It isn't the summit, it's the journey: I hiked the Western Breach route in September and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Circumstances were a bit challenging for me (my luggage was lost by the airlines and then I caught a cold...), but it was still such a great experience that I felt a great sadness coming down the mountain, knowing it was over. I strongly recommend going this route: the slow ascent allows you to acclimate perfectly, but it also gives you time to enjoy where you are and what you are doing (the scenery & views are gorgeous). It also gives you a fantastic opportunity to get to know your guide and porters, perhaps even learn something about the country you are visiting. The company my friends and I went with is F&S Kiliwarrior (www.go-kili.com) and I feel they are what made the trip so phenomenal. Aside from coordinating the trip flawlessly, this company pays and treats its employees well and it shows -- they have a spirit of togetherness and excellence I did not notice in any other groups we encountered. It was my privilege to be on the mountain with them. (Questions welcome)
