Mount Kilimanjaro Trip Report (#3587)

I summited Kilimanjaro as a party of only one. I am a 43 year old male with no climbing history or experience. I am 6-1 and 200 lbs. Too big to be doing this I am told. It is tough to find anyone in Texas interested in going to Africa to climb some mountain. I went the Western Breach Route. Yes, it is tough but it is also very quiet. The only sickness I felt was at Crater camp at 18,500. It passed in a couple of hours. I met no other Americans and a lot of people in better shape than be came off the mountain on a stretcher. My advice is simple. Eat everything in sight and drink Gatorade till you want to puke every chance you get. I drank 7 liters some days. Think positive, never say die. Take good shoes. Cotton kills, wear synthetics only. Carry Diamox. Enjoy the beautiful vistas. You will never feel closer to God. Go ahead and cry, for joy only, every time you want, at the thoughts of where you are and what you are doing. Remember who you are every night in your tent. Carry pictures from home. Learn some Swahili. The porters are a riot to joke with. I summited at 0730 hours in a freezing snow/sleet with a heavy wind. Some frostbite on my nose and toes but who cares. I earned it. It is my trophy.
