Hmmm... long time ago now! Took the Machame route with guide and did over two weeks, so had a long time to acclimatise. Cannot remember the time of year - end of the season I think. I was 27 and, at that time, did not do any regular exercise, but I did not seem to suffer for it. We summitted in whiteout conditions (no need for crampons) so no panoramic view of the dark continent for me! We waited for a while, took a photograph in front of _that_ sign, and then descended. My gloves were woefully inadequate (since rectified!) which resulted in my losing feeling in some of my fingers for about 4 weeks. Joseph, my guide, wore several pairs of socks for gloves, and I would guess his hands were nice and toasty all the way up and down! Took a normal domestic torch for the ascent (!), but batteries were affected by the cold.
