Together with a group of five friends from Aberdeen, Scotland and three strangers (who became firm friends during our trek)we travelled with Gane & Marshall, our guide's name was Daniel. Gane & Marshall were excellent from start to finish and our guide was exceptional. He assesed our group and changed our itinerary to suit the group to ensure we had the best chance of summiting. On the last night he walked the line appearing out of the darkness to help when ever anyone faltered. We all had slight signs of altitude sickness at some time during the climb, but thanks to our team and our own tenacity we made it to the top about 6.30 a.m. on 6th March 2004.

If anyone is thinking of doing the trek - JUST DO IT! It is an astonishing adventure, provided you can go for several days without washing and without going to a proper toilet. The scenery is magnificent and the views from the top as the sun rose over Africa was enough to make grown men cry (at least that is my excuse, it was nothing to do with the effort, or the emotion of reaching the top).

Although many groups of climbers could claim to equal or achievement on the great mountain, few could claim to match our celebrations when we made it back to our lodge. We managed to consume the lodge's whole supply of Kilimanjaro and Kibo beer before making a serious dent in their stock of malt whiskey and Drambui.

I spent a long time researching this expedition, if anyone out there is considering the climb and has any questions or needs some advice please feel free to e.mail me. During my planning I contacted several people in this log, they were all very willing to help and gave me sound advice, my thanks to them all.
