Altitude problems; nausea, loss of appetite, lethargy, inability to sleep properly and general feeling of malaise were a surprise for me. Had not anticipated the debilitating nature of the condition. The last food on the way up was at Mandara Hut (9000') and this was where I first ate again on the descent. Over 4 days without food and during the 6-day trek I lost 14 lbs. (6 kg). The view from Uhuru was stunning, however, because of tiredness I failed to appreciate it at the time. So glad I did it, although it proved harder than I had ever imagined.
