A truly amazing experience - would do it again tomorrow. I was one of a group of seven Australians ranging in age from 25 to 65. We did the Machame Route and our guide was the only person with the qualification Senior Mountain Guide. My sister became badly affected with altitude on only the second day and suffered a fit,was unconscious for twenty minutes and had to be taken off the mountain the next morning. The scary thing is that there is simply no way to summon the emergency services even in life and death situations. Only three of us reached Uhuru Peak, and the other three remaining people reached Stella Point. For me I had no affects of altitude except for the 'altitude cough' which dissipated quickly on descent. For those who didn't quite make it, a range of emotions were evident, mostly downright devastation. For me though - elation - I am now looking for something higher - possibly Mera Peak in the Nepal Himalaya. I definitely am on "a high" with this altitude trekking!! Cheers..... Julie Johns
