Wisdom would be asking a bit much after all the hypoxia, but my girlfriend Susan Mantyla (at age 45) and I (at age 44) summited around noon on a beautiful clear day just right for looking out over African plains. We are very grateful to our lead guide Joachim Mato and to the rest of our staff of 10 (!) for great guiding and for the wonderful food they gave us the whole eight trekking days. Climbing it that slowly ("pole, pole") was good since we didn't return to our luggage at the Nairobi Hilton the day the embassy was bombed.
I have also summited Cotopaxi and sat atop Kala Pattar near Everest Base Camp, good examples of how much fun you can have and beauty you can see without really technical climbing. Next stop, Acongagua or bust!
