Had a wonderful experience with ZARA and our guide, Chombo. Machame route was beautiful and less trafficked than the Marangu. Would highly recommend bringing your own very warm sleeping bag. The one I rented from our outfitter was not nearly warm enough! I would recommend lots of layers as opposed to one warm and bulky coat. While summit morning is very cold, things get much warmer on the way down and you will want to remove some layers. Our headlamps lasted about an hour and a half per set of batteries so test your lamps before you go and bring an appropriate amount of spare batteries. Took Diamox and experienced few side effects. My head pounded on summit day, which is exhausting. Eat and drink as much as you can even though your appetite may virtually disappear. Post summit discussions included trying to figure out which is worse, running a marathon, childbirth, or summit day on Kilimanjaro. It is a challenge, but well worth the effort. Best advice is to keep a positive attitude - You can do it! Tip your guide, cook, and porters well. They really appreciate any extra clothing you can give them in addition to the tip, especially shoes. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions.
