Anyone who is thinking of Klimbing Kili, I say do it. It was the most rewarding experience I have ever obtained. A few pieces of advice. We did the Maranga Route(Coca-Cola). Have an experienced guide. Listen to them. Take an extra day to acclimate. USE DIAMOX if you can. EAT all the food they provide, and DRINK lots of water and TEA. Pole-Pole. Which means SLOW... Take your time!!!! If you take your time, you will make it.
Lets see, be sure to dress warm for the sumit day. Many layers of wicking clothes. Cover your exposed body parts as best as possible. Be sure that you have a sleeping bag that will keep you warm. Some nights were very cold.(below freezing near the top) On summit day, be sure to use fresh batteries, our lights worked fine, for all 6 in our group. Also, as long as you keep your camera close to your body and somewhat protected, it WILL work on the summit.
I think the best chances of getting to the summit for our group were as follows. Keep warm, keep a positive attitute even when it gets difficult. Eat well, drink fluids(4 liters daily) support each other, listen to your guide, take Diamox ( our dose was 250mg in AM and 125mg at 3pm) Don't take it in the evening cuz you will be up all night going to the bathroom. Also, drink the hot tea provided, but limit the ammount in the evening cuz it will also make you go to the bathroom. Wear sun block for sure, and wear a protective hat to keep the sun off your head and face. 2 of the 6 in our group also took 1 Ginko Baloba (herb) each day and did not experience any headaches, but all others in our group had them.
Well that is enough to say except for this:: EVER FORWARD NEVER BACKWARD, keep a positive mind, stay focused, and most of all have fun, cuz it is the greatest thing that I have ever done. Ever!!! Enjoy!! Feel free to e-mail me with questions WeakRich@aol.com Thanks and Good Luck Richard Lowery
