Fabulous mountain - fabulous trekking company! Three of us, Brad, Tom and myself - Bambi, summited with Marangu Hotel guide Evance at 7:00 AM on 6/30/01. The climb was tough but persistence pays! Keep plodding along slowly, slowly and you'll get there. On summit day DO NOT rest for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. Keep moving or you'll get too cold. Those who rested longer on our summit day didn't make it!
Also, take diamox if you think it will help you - even if it's just a mental fix! What's the difference? Making the summit is what's important - especially after you've come all that way! Some folks do, some folks don't. Do what works for you. And if you're going to take it - I'd suggest 2 a day, beginning 3 days before you even start the trek. That way the diuretic effects will be gone by the time you get to elevation.
Lastly, don't take a 19,000 ft. mountain lightly. No matter which route you take, it's not a breeze. The most fit people still get sick and sometimes the not-so-fit make it to the top. It's like the "Little train that could" - Keep telling yourself you can, keep moving and you can do it too.
Good luck - it's well worth the effort.
