Mount Kilimanjaro Trip Report (#4066)

I completed a seven day Zara Travel hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route with a successful summit of Uhuru Peak on July 31, 2001. The Rongai Route is one of the least used trails on Kili, but, in my opinion, it is one of the best due to its scenery and gradual ascent. The latter provides ample opportunity to acclimatize.
I selected Zara Travel as the outfitter and Saidi as a guide. Both Zara and Saidi were great.
I had Diamox but did not use it as I did not experience any symtoms of altitude sickness.
The ascent to Gilmans Point and then to Uhuru was tough, but due to an aggressive conditioning program, my 54 year body did just fine. For all you 50+ men and women, you can do it too.
