To climb Kings Peak with real solitude do it in the winter! My third winter attempt was "the charm." Several of us worked real hard breaking trail for two days to get to Dollar Lake. The low temp at night was -14 deg F. On summit day five of us got some needed rest and finally left at 11am for our climb. We broke trail up to Gunsight Pass, Anderson Pass, and up the summit ridge. Storm clouds and snow limited the visibility throughout the afternoon but blue sky came out just as we reached Anderson Pass. Ice axes helped on steep nasty sections. We reached the top of Kings just after the sun set. What an incredible climb and view! What a great sunset! It was -4 deg F and calm at the summit. After some quick photos we made our way back to camp arriving at 1:30 a.m. It was a long ski out to the trucks on Saturday. What a beautiful place in the winter!
