Tony, Tomas and I are three friends who know each other through the electrical engineering dept at BYZ. Started out from the trailhead at 3pm on Friday, 24 Aug. Made it to the last trees before Gunsight at 6:30.
Left at 7am for the summit. Took the shortcut on the right past Gunsight and passed an 82 year-old man who was doing this for the eight consecutive year! Summited at 10:15 or something like that. Beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, temperature was about 80 degrees.
Left at 11am. Got the bright idea of heading straight east off of the summit down a rock slide. It may have cut time off the return trip, but it wasn't safe. A somewhat safer thing to do might be to go southeast down, then follow a ridge east to the base of the peak. Two brothers we met on top did this in half the time we took to come down.
Got to camp at 1:30pm or so. Left at 3pm for home. Made it to trailhead in 2:45. I think we did the entire trail from Dollar Lake to the trailhead in two hours.
I suggest taking 2.5 days at least. Even though it was fun for us to do it faster than any other time we've seen, I think we would have enjoyed it more if we'd had time to do a little fishing or just rest.
