Pico de la Maladeta shares the name of Maladeta, the massif from which it rises. Interestingly, the peak is not the highest of the massif, but ranks second to Pico d'Aneto (11,168 ft.), the highest peak of the Pyrenees. The two peaks rise from the Portillon, which is the high rocky backbone of the massif. Pico de la Maladeta supports the majority of the Aneto Glacier, which flanks its eastern slopes and is the longest glacier in the Pyrenees.
