Mount Meru

Mount Meru Trip Report (#5543)

First, I must admit, none of my companions nor I summitted. Although disappointing as this may have been, the climb was one of the most physically and mentally demanding challenges I have ever had. Set amongst a grand mountain and an interesting people, it was also the most rewarding. My two companions, a Tanzanian and an America, and I climbed from residential Arusha to near summit and down again in three days with the aid of 6 liters of water, a few oranges, a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and a small tent. We headed up the backside of the mountain mapless, sometimes following logging trails sometimes hacking our way through the lush forest. Although steeper and a bit more dangerous, for the adventuresome, I would highly recommend this means of travel. The people, the rural life, and the virgin forest that you will see is matchless to any hut you may inhabit through the more traditional route. My only caution is to breach the treeline late in the day as to avoid Park Rangers on the front side. Safari Njema!
